On the morning of Friday, May 2nd, our systems experienced a spike in traffic that appeared to originate from automated sources (bots). While most traffic to our job board is legitimate, this surge overwhelmed parts of our infrastructure, resulting in a series of intermittent connection timeouts and internal server errors for some users.
This issue led to:
17 separate periods of degraded performance between 5:41 AM and 9:07 AM ET
Intermittent 500 Internal Server Errors occurring in short bursts between 5:45 AM – 9:07 AM ET
Despite the disruptions, most periods of instability lasted under 15 minutes, and our engineering team began mitigating the issue immediately upon detection.
As soon as elevated error rates were identified:
- We implemented temporary rate limits to slow down automated traffic
- Blocked suspected malicious sources to reduce pressure on servers
- Restored normal access for all users by 9:07 AM ET
What We’re Doing to Prevent Recurrence
To strengthen resilience moving forward:
- We’re enhancing our bot detection filters and introducing smarter traffic profiling
- Our infrastructure team is tuning server thresholds and scaling policies
- Additional real-time alerts have been configured to identify unusual patterns even earlier
